To Western eyes, Tawakkol Karman is completely inspiring. Vibrant. Smiling. Intelligent. Forceful. Thirty-two years old and about to set the world on fire. Or maybe she already has. A reporter associated with Al Jazerra said his eyes filled with tears when he learned of her selection as Peace Prize winner. It meant, he said, that the despots who have tried to marginalize and discredit legitimate democratic movements have themselves been marginalized and discredited. He said that the plight of Arab peoples who have suffered under such regimes is now made manifest to the world. To those of us who watched and listened to her Nobel address on Saturday, it is quite clear why and how she will set the world on fire.
